The Solar Panel Superhighway

What if all the roads in America were made of solar panels? All they do is sit there all day absorbing the sun's power anyway. What if we could channel that clean energy into the nation's power grid?

Well, the Department of Transportation has taken its first step towards making this concept a reality by awarding a startup named Solar Roadways $100,000 to create a prototype.

Not only could these panels power entire communities–and eventually the entire nation if all our roads were replaced with them–they would even contain embedded LED's that could be used to light travel lines, alert motorists to accidents and driving conditions, and much more. In addition, there would be embedded heating devices that could prevent snow and ice from building up on the roads.

This makes our current roadways seem really, really stupid and entirely inefficient. Obviously this project is just at the start, and a lot of work and money is needed, but I hope this concept becomes a reality as soon as humanly possible.
