Miles Fisher - "New Romance"

Miles Fisher is sort of a Jack of all entertainment trades. He's appeared on Mad Men and Gossip Girl (both times as a drug dealer), and is famous for his impressions, most notably interviewing Tom Cruise at the MTV Movie awards as Tom Cruise. His previous music video was for his cover of "This Must Be The Place", where he parodies American Psycho to perfection. If you haven't seen that, definitely click here to watch it. Here is his parody of Saved By The Bell for his new movie Final Destination 5, featuring the cast of the movie.

America, Fuck Yeah!

If the studio behind this movie had any sense at all, this would be the real trailer for this movie.

Portlandia - "Did You Read?"

Being a former Portlander, I am greatly looking forward to this show, debuting January 21 on IFC. Here's a little sample.

Salem | King Night

Just finished listening to the newly leaked full-length debut album from Salem titled King Night, thanks to my illegal downloading friend over at The Sassmouth Chronicles. It is as good as was expected, which is impressive since my expectations were quite high. The ablum is a perfect continuation of the sound they developed on their debut EP. I heard hints of "Ave Maria" in the opening title track "King Night" and of New Order's "Bizzare Love Triangle" in the closing track "Killer". They've also incorporated a bit of "rapping" onto a couple tracks, as the kids tend to like such urban flavors. It's subtle and tasteful, of course, as you would expect from Salem. Definitely check this album out if you get the chance. Commence me listening to it non-stop for the next three weeks...............now.

Mapping Lost

Here are a few maps of the LOST island and events. The top two were created by a professional cartographer, while the bottom one features tons of plot points from the show. Click here for more.

"Time To Pretend" - Covered By JĂłnsi Of Sigur Ros

Literally just this morning I was listening to MGMT's "Time To Pretend" and something very, very strange happened to the mix of the digital track or my speakers or my computer that made the song cut out several layers of instruments, leaving just a couple tracks of vocals and guitars, and removing a lot of the samples and beats and vocals, resulting in an almost acoustic-sounding version of the song, and I thought to myself, that would make a really great acoustic cover, I should learn it. Then I see homeboy from Sigur Ros has already done this. But his is on the piano, so I can still do the guitar version. Phew!

Holly Miranda - "Lover, You Should Have Come Over"

Possibly my favorite song ever, definitely my favorite song to play, and oddly a very under-covered song. I mean I love "Hallelujah" as much as the next guy, but this song seems like it would have been covered by tons of people. Not so. Then again, it's kind of nice that I'm not forced to see American Idol contestants attempting to do this song justice. Some things are best kept secret.

The Lost Supper

Oh boy...the folks at Lost have apparently decided to get a bit cheeky. They've recreated "The Last Supper" with the Losties. I'm actually mildly annoyed by this because I really don't think it means anything at all, but they probably would like us to think it does. From left to right, here are the folks in the original Last Supper portrait: Bartholomew, James Minor, Andrew, Judas, Peter, John, Jesus, Thomas, James Major, Philip, Matthew, Thaddeus, and Simon. Draw your own conclusions, but I'm not biting on this one. It's cute, but I doubt there's much else to it.

Also, click here for an excellent interview with the men behind Lost. They speak pretty openly (as much as a Lost producer can) about the final season. Definitely worth the read if you follow the show.

Stereotyping People By Their Favorite Author

A very amusing list of authors and the type of person who reads them. Here are some of my favorites:

Chuck Klosterman - Boys who don’t read.

Chuck Palahniuk - Boys who can’t read.

Charles Dickens - Ninth graders who think they’re going to be authors someday but end up in marketing.

Mark Twain - Liars.

Michael Crichton - Doctors who went to third-tier medical schools.

William Faulkner - People who are good at crosswords.

Friedrich Nietzsche - Sommelieres.

Bret Easton Ellis - Foo Fighters’ fans.

Hunter S Thompson - That kid in your philosophy class with the stupid tattoo.

Toni Morrison - Female high-school English professors who only have an undergraduate degree.

Richard Serra - "Charlie Brown"

This 60-foot sculpture from Richard Serra–titled "Charlie Brown"–is located in the lobby of 2 Folsom, the San Francisco headquarters of my employer, Gap, Inc. The crevasse on the right is an opening that allows you to walk inside. It's probably my favorite piece from Mr. Serra, and I love that it is constantly accessible to me. I also just learned that Mr. Serra is from San Francisco, which ties together nicely. Click here to see videos about the creation and installation of the piece.

Empty LA

I love this concept. A series of photographs of Los Angeles without any people in the image. Sort of like that scene from Vanilla Sky in Tom Cruise's dream where he drives through Times Square and it's completely empty and then does his signature Tom-Cruise-running-in-a-movie moment.

I'm not sure exactly how these photos were accomplished, but I assume they just made liberal use of Photoshop to remove any cars or people present.

These images are especially timely as Thanksgiving weekend is here and San Francisco is cleared out. One of my favorite things about the holidays – an empty city.

Click here for more, or to buy the book.

Why You Need A Copy Editor

A delightfully passive-aggressive copy editor at the Toronto Star marked up this memo announcing the elimination of copy-editing jobs at the Toronto Star.

Beware the wrath of the copy department. We can be your best friend or your worst enemy.
