The Chemical Brothers Score Hanna

So we went to see Hanna at the Sundance Kabuki on Friday, and other than a woman sitting next to me who sighed with empathy/admiration/sadness/humor every 30 seconds and said "Oh Jeez" any time anything happened at all, it was a pretty enjoyable experience. The movie was solid, not life changing, but solid, and I was particularly pleased to discover the soundtrack is totally awesome. I kept Shazaming it throughout the movie and quickly realized all the songs were done by The Chemical Brothers. Hats off to those guys, they're really enjoying a second coming. I was super into them in the 90's and really thought they were dunzo after that, but starting with a post I did almost a year ago it's come to my attention that these guys can still put together some killer tracks. They should definitely do more movies. Well done, boys.

Sleeping Beauty

This looks really awesome. Very Eyes Wide Shut. From what I understand, it's a story that deals with high-end prostitution, and Emily Browning's character's specialty is taking a drug that knocks her out so the man can have his way with her and she will awake to have no recollection of anything that happened.

I Would Like To Buy A Hamburger

Whilst in Acapulco, Junna and I were in bed flipping through the channels and came across one of the few that was in English, and it was playing The Pink Panther with Steve Martin. I was surprised at how much I was enjoying it, and this scene in particular had me laughing for several minutes straight. We still quote it all the time; it's quite fun, I highly recommend you try it.

That's how long it has been estimated Phil Connors (played by Bill Murray in Groundhog Day) is stuck repeating the same day. To see how that estimate was arrived at, click here. It's a very in depth look at clues gathered throughout the movie to lead to a pretty spot on guess at just how long he spends reliving the same day.

This really is one of my favorite movies. I especially love that Buddhists recognize it as a cinematic version of the teachings of Buddhism. "'Groundhog Day' perfectly illustrates the Buddhist notion of samsara, the continuing cycle of rebirth that Buddhists regard as suffering that humans must try to escape. 'Groundhog Day' is a cinematic version of the teachings in Mahayana Buddhism, known as 'the greater vehicle'. In Mahayana, nobody ever imagines they are going to escape samsara until everybody else does. That is why you have bodhisattvas, who reach the brink of nirvana, and stop and come back and save the rest of us. Bill Murray is the bodhisattva. He is not going to abandon the world. On the contrary, he is released back into the world to save it."

The Assassination of Yogi Bear by the Coward Boo-Boo Bear

Absolutely brilliant. Someone created an ending to Yogi Bear following the same ending to The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. It's expertly done and actually incredibly moving. I'm curious if the same folks behind the movie created this, and if so, to what end. Either way, I love it.

RIP Leslie Nielsen

I think I was at just the right age (8, 11, and 14 respectively) to appreciate The Naked Gun trilogy. I'm tempted to go back and watch them now, but I fear I might find them to be stupid. That, or based on the above clip, they might be absolute genius. I wonder if I even understood this joke when I first saw it. Either way, thanks for making me laugh, Mr. Nielsen.

This is a short film starring my friend Ben Duhl. I had no idea he was even an actor, let alone such a good one! I loved it!! Such a cute little story. Take 10 minutes and have a look. You'll be happy you did.

Power Laces Are Here

YES. Some do-it-yourselfer seems to have made pretty good progress at the long-sought-after "power laces" made famous in Back To The Future II . They look pretty damn good to me! On a side note, Nike has apparently applied for a patent on their own power laces design. It would seem these might actually finally happen, one way or another.

The End Of An Era

Looks like it's really coming to a close.

24/7 Wall St. has placed Blockbuster Video near the top of its list for brands most-likely to disappear in 2011.

This makes me very sad. There's just something very nostalgic and comforting about heading to the video store with your gal or family or friends to pick up some movies for the evening. Lost with Netflix is the spontaneous trip to browse the aisles of Blockbuster while cracking wise at all the stupid movies on the shelves and gross candy for sale and then returning home to settle in for a film you didn't have to plan for in advance and wait for in the mail from a queue on a website.

Don't get me wrong I use and love Netflix, but I also would frequent Blockbuster or Hollywood whenever I wanted something right away or just had to see something on a whim that night. I liked having both options and it's too bad that has to change. I remember how exciting and fun it was to go rent a movie with my parents when my brother and I were little, and I guess it's too bad that will now be a thing of the past.

I don't know how, but it would appear from this trailer that they actually somehow were able to make a movie about Facebook that seems pretty compelling.

Dear Sophia Coppola,

Why do you bother me so much? I suppose it's that you always seem to take things that I feel are near and dear to me and then feature them in your movies for all the world to see and hear and then I feel so very not unique. This time in a trailer less than two short minutes long you've managed to combine my favorite spot in LA as the setting for your entire film, the Chateau (although it's really been falling off recently, so maybe you can just have that) and a treasure of a song from Mr. Casablancas nearly in its entirety that was the opening track in Junna's birthday mix last year. I'm shocked you didn't cast Ben Foster in the lead role. I can only imagine what other nuggets you've mined from my life to exploit on the big screen for your own professional gain.

With all that said, I am still very much looking forward to seeing this movie, if for no other reason than to see Chateau Marmont in all her cinematic glory.

The New Transformer

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is apparently the replacement to Megan Fox for the third installment of Transformers. I think Michael Bay saw her in an off-Broadway production of Hamlet and was just blown away by her portrayal of Gertrude, the Queen of Denmark.

Anchorman: The Sequel

I don't know how to put this but it's kind of a big deal. Anchorman may finally be getting a sequel. Apparently all the actors are willing to do it for a significantly reduced rate, considering they're all pretty big deals now. The story is even mostly in place, moving out of the 70's and into the 80's. It'll be made with bits of real panther, so you know it's good. Great story. Compelling, and rich. Exit Through The Gift Shop

Exit Through The Gift Shop is a documentary about the rise of street art over the last decade. It features the famously anonymous Banksy and the famously famous Shepard Fairey among others and is currently playing in select cities.

It's interesting to note that the marketing actually says "A Banksy Film" and IMDB says it was directed by Banksy, even though the preview makes it appear as if it's all done by some French filmmaker interested in street art.
